Grand Total:

Is microwave really good for you?

by Jennifer | 11 Dec 2017

I’m sure that you have wondered before how the microwave oven heats up your food and worried that microwave may harm our health. Should we stop using microwave oven or not? 🤔🤔 It’s time to solve your worries!

How does microwave heat food?
The commonly used frequency in microwave oven is 2.45 gigahertz as it is easily absorbed by water, fat, and sugar. The waves at the right frequency will penetrate deep into food and they deliver cooking power primarily to the food's water content.

Microwaves heat food by twisting water molecules back and forth. Water molecules are positively charged at one end and negatively charged at the other. But because the field reverses 2.5 billion times a second, water molecule are being twisted back and forth rapidly.

As the molecules twist back and forth, they rub into each other. This creates friction, which produces heat.

Will microwave harmful to your health?
Actually, it’s not, as long as you use it in a correct way.

Because microwave is a kind of radiation, which is essentially the same thing as radio waves, sound waves, and visible light rays. The only difference is the frequency of microwave is higher than electric wave but lower than infrared and visible light. Waves and visible light do not cause cancer. Thus, the frequencies of microwave between them are also not carcinogenic.

So, how to use microwave oven correctly?
There are some basics of using microwave to prevent negative effects.

1.Don’t use plastic and metal containers
• As heating with these materials can cause carcinogenic toxins leak into foods. Therefore, it’s better to use the special glass or ceramic containers that are safe for microwave ovens usage.

2.Don’t heat the food in sealed packaging
• Such as bags, bottled, canned food and also food with skin and shell such as chestnuts and eggs. This is to avoid explosion or pollute the microwave oven.

3.Don’t stand in front of the microwave oven for a long time after turning on
• It is important to stay away 1 meters away from microwave oven.

4.Don’t observe when operating
• As eyes are most sensitive to microwave radiation.

5.Don’t heat milk
• As part of the amino acids in the milk will be transformed into harmful substances after heating.

6.Don’t over-heating
• If food is heated in microwave over 2 hours, don’t eat it as it may cause food poisoning.

7.Don’t put too much food to be microwaved at a time
• The food in the microwave oven should not be too full which is about not more than the 1/3 of the volume.
