High Fibre, iron and zinc
Oats are so good for us because they contain soluble fibre. Soluble fibre in oats has the important function of reducing blood cholesterol levels- it mops up the cholesterol and flushes it out of the body before it can be absorbed. Oats also have a high protein content compared to other grains which can help you feel fuller for longer and they are good sources of iron and zinc. While oats contain a little more fat than other grains- it's the good type, which provides essential fatty acids.
Type of Oats:
The three most common forms of oats you can buy are rolled, quick and oatmeal. Rolled oats are simple oat grains that are steamed and compressed. Quick oats are smaller in size, flattened so they are thinner than rolled oats and are pre-cooked. And oatmeal if finely ground grains of oat.
Storing:
Because of the slightly higher natural fat content, oats can go rancid. So, buy oats as you need them and keep them in the fridge in an air tight container.
Serving Instruction
Oats can be eaten traditionally - cooked with milk and drizzled with honey, but you can also add sultanas, cinnamon and dried fruit to give them a lift. Combine strawberries, yoghurt and sprinkle of oats as a nutritious snack or use raw oats in your own homemade bircher, cinnamon, or fruit and nut muesli. Oatmeal can be used in cakes and biscuits as well as for crumble in fruit based desserts.
