How to Make Your Own Organic Shampoos

by Faraaz | 23 Dec 2018

Being able to prepare and make your own shampoo could be nothing short of an amazing achievement right? I mean, you will be able to decide what goes into the making of the shampoo itself, you are aware of its ingredients and you know how your own personal little experiment will benefit you. A lot of us are also concerned with the ingredients in the commercial shampoos which are sold out there. With the way and the rate at which new shampoo products are being introduced into Malaysia, the consumers may often be left in a heap of confusion as to which one could be the best and the most optimum choice for their own hair. There are a number of shampoo companies in Malaysia which are from within the country itself and there is also an option to go for the imported shampoos. But, what if you could choose to make your own shampoo, does that tickle your fancy? Making your own personal organic shampoo is not as hard as it may sound or seem to be. It is just a method which you need and require some getting used to and it works like a charm each time. And certain homemade shampoos with just as little as even two ingredients can also be cheaper and as effective if not even more effective in comparison to your regular commercial shampoos. Below are a few tips and tricks that you could implement and try out in order to make your own homemade organic shampoo.

1. Basic shampoo

First of all is going to be your basic homemade shampoo with your own ingredients. This requires minimum effort and works very well. But make sure to not get simplicity associated with ineffectiveness. Because this has proven to be working very well for other people who have given it a go.

Ingredients:
For this method you are going to require one teaspoon of baking soda, and a little side note, make sure to keep quite a bit of this baking soda because this mainly goes into the making of the shampoos. And the second ingredient is going to be water.

Instructions & How is it used
We start with mixing the ingredients together. Go ahead and mix yours in double batches into a clean, makeshift shampoo bottle. Feel free to use whatever container you may like, doubling up on the ingredients until it is completely full. And for its use, simply shake the bottle before each use and apply directly onto your scalp and hair. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp and hair for a minute or two before rinsing well. For the optimum results, follow up with a homemade conditioning rinse. The homemade conditioning rinse is very necessary in order to restore the pH of your hair and smoothing as well a softening your hair cuticle. It will also prevent your hair from feeling greasy or sticky after the usage of homemade shampoos.

Notes
This homemade organic shampoo is not meant or intended for daily use, as the properties of the baking soda can potentially be drying to your hair and scalp. We genuinely recommend you to use it as a clarifying shampoo. It is suitable and perfect for those times when you tend to get a little bit carried away with commercial hair products and need to reduce and remove some excess buildup, or when you are initially first switching over from commercial shampoos to organic homemade shampoos and need to remove as well as reduce some of the buildup the commercial shampoos can leave behind.

2. Coconut milk shampoo

Ingredients
This can be said to be a fancier alternative to the basic shampoo earlier. For this you are going to need a quarter cup of coconut milk, a quarter cup of liquid castile soap, 20 drops of any essential oils of your choice, for example peppermint, lavender rosemary and such. This can also be used as a combination. And finally, for dry hair, add a half teaspoon of olive oil or almond oil.

How to make & Notes
First of all, you will need to combine all these ingredients into an older shampoo bottle or jar of some kind, any pump soap dispensers and even foaming dispensers works well for this. If you are using a foaming dispenser, add about quarter of a cup of distilled water. After that, you will need to shake well to mix all the ingredients together. You can keep it in the shower for up to a month. Storing this for over a month is not recommended as you need a fresher batch frequently. You should shake the bottle or jar before each use. For applying, you need about a teaspoon of it every time you shampoo. If you would want to try it as a shaving cream, it also makes a great shaving cream, just dilute with 1/4 cup distilled water. As for some side notes, some people also tend to find that a 50:50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water used as a rinse helps to get your hair cleaner and increases shine.

What these homemade organic shampoos do is that they provide you with all sorts of benefits which cannot easily be found out there in those commercial shampoos. First of all, not all the commercial shampoos out there are safe for all the hair types or for certain hair issues that we may be experiencing and encountering at that certain point of time. But with organic homemade shampoos, you eliminate this risk simply due to the fact that homemade shampoos are much safer in comparison to those commercial ones. This shampoo is absolutely and completely safe for all hair types and does not carry the tendency of stripping your hair of its natural oils, unlike what most commercial shampoo. Be sure to always question the safety and reliability of your regular store-bought commercial shampoos, along with any other products that you may buy and always be aware and well acknowledged and have a certain understanding of the ingredients of the products you use. This is actually very important for us regarding the products that we tend to use and apply over our bodies. We should be aware and responsible for our own bodies and what we let it get into contact with.

There are also certain tips that you may follow in order to controlling hair static. This may include either using another type of shampoo or a rinse which helps control the static. This is very much important and needed for you if you are someone that does heat styling frequently, you may happen to notice some static when using this shampoo in the rather colder months. You can overcome the static and try to control this by trying some of these tips. Make sure that you are trimming the ends of your hair every 6-8 weeks, less split ends equals to lesser static of your hair.

You could also try shampooing less often or not so frequently. This means that you would be better off shampooing your hair every other day or maybe a minimum of three times a week. But shampooing every day is not recommended at all and will end up causing dry and coarse hair. Also ensure that you are reducing or lessening the use of heating elements such as blow dryers, flat/curling irons, and so on. By doing this you are able to maintain better hair and avoid excessive heat from your hair all together. Try massaging in a tablespoon of olive oil once a week and then rinsing. Also, make sure to try melting a small amount of coconut oil in your hands and rub through the ends of your hair, avoiding your scalp. This is simply for the end of your hair only.

Another treatment is by trying avocado and lemon juice. This is done by mixing them together, applying it onto your hair, and letting it sit for about 30 minutes and then rinsing.

Finally, these alternatives are truly a great one in order to gain an option over your day to day commercial shampoos. Considering trying an organically made homemade shampoo is truly something that you have been looking for all this while for possibly achieving better looking hair. And besides that, you have a control over what goes onto your hair and scalp. And to be honest, nothing beats that satisfaction.
