Grand Total:

Why Eat Less When You Can Eat Healthy?

by Stefanie | 24 Feb 2020

Every new year has seen and heard countless resolutions being made that revolves around a diet. This conventional idea has been around for years and though it may sound logical in theory, is almost rarely effective. Numerous studies have shown that restricting your calories only does more harm to your body than good. You can feel your body rejecting such a dehumanizing method of weight loss when temptations get harder to resist. Here are 3 reasons why you should scrap the diet mentality:

1. Eating less does not lead to long-term weight loss.
I know what you may be thinking. “But, I did in fact lose some weight after 1 week after dieting!”. Of course you did. It is normal to experience some weight loss after the first few weeks of restricting your calories but research has shown that this is not long-term. Diets are generally difficult to stick to therefore the more you restrict yourself, the more you tend to rebel. As cliché as it may sound, your body truly knows you best so it will resist weight loss to help you get back on track.

2. Eating less disassociates you from your body’s own needs.
This is actually a bigger problem than you may think because we are indirectly teaching our body to conform to arbitrary and societal standards instead of listening to your own body. Imposing restrictions on yourself ironically undermines your body’s own knowledge towards hunger levels and cravings. This leads to unnecessary eating disorders which could develop just because you refuse to listen to your own body.

3. Eating less leads to relapses more easily.
Your body knows when you are depriving yourself off certain nutrients, so its natural response would be to binge. Binging is a common side effect of dieting as it is your body’s way of reaching out for any nutrients to instantly help you regain your energy levels, which explains why sugar and carbohydrates are common binges since they are the surest form of energy. This can in turn become an even more serious problem when you begin consciously avoiding binging thus leading to yet another unhealthy binge.
