The Purpose Of Fantasy

by Stefanie | 21 Jul 2021

It is only human nature for us to want peace of mind and a sense of escapism from the real world. Living up to our fantasies gives us just that and so much more. Yet, fantasy is still a rather controversial topic, especially among parents − Are children able to tell the difference between fantasy and reality?

Fantasy is an important aspect for the human mind. Children learn to explore the psychological process and experience the concept of knowledge, reality and experience. This is vital for it helps them develop a coping mechanism as an adult. A classic example of using fantasy to bridge the gap between experience and knowledge is the spooks we would get as a child, hearing a creak in the wall. There is just no way children would understand the mechanics of an internal piping system so we would instead have them engage in fantasy to make sense of the experience. Perhaps Spiderman is hiding behind the walls? Fantasy in this concept gives children a safe space to explore reality.

Children are born and equipped with a multitude of human emotions. Some can be exciting and vigorous while others might just be irrational and illogical. This makes fantasy an excellent concept to learn. It gives them the possibility to experience and develop emotions that are getting closer to reality every day. As they get older, these fantasies include more mature topics like divorce, death and love hence preparing children to limber up and be ready for reality and the emergence of adult life when it hits. Fantasy is just one step away from reality as it allows us the opportunity to experience the highs and lows of life with a much clearer perspective.
