Yoga during the Pandemic: Why Start Now?

Emotions are running on a high during this pandemic. It incites anxiety, fear and panic in most of us and these emotions can arguably be just as dangerous towards the community. Scientific studies have shown that our brains are wired to share the emotions of those around us. We are able to learn a lot about a person by simply understanding and being attentive to their emotional reactions. However, we will tend to neglect how such emotions affect us personally and in turn, can be detrimental towards our emotional wellbeing.

This is where the sacred practice of yoga comes in handy!



Yoga has immense benefits towards our physical and mental health, especially during the pandemic. The many yoga poses and postures help in boosting our endocrine system as well as strengthening our thyroid and adrenal glands as well as our liver. Having a good hormonal balance tremendously helps to improve our immune system; our protective shield in fighting the COVID-19 infection.

Other than that, the pandemic has also seen national lockdowns in place in order to break the chain of infection. Being confined to our homes can lead to an increase in stress and anxiety for we will be facing everything on our own. These emotions can show up as bodily sensations such as having an increased heart rate, irregular breathing and tightness in the chest. Yoga has a healing touch that helps in keeping our mental and emotional wellbeing in check. Through controlled breathing and mental concentration, we are able to relieve stress and alleviate our moods. This is because yoga elevates the levels of a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is associated with putting us in a better mood and decreased anxiety.
