Counting Down To Chinese New Year

by Stefanie | 10 Jan 2023

We’re only weeks away from the Chinese New Year festivities. If you haven’t already, it’s best to start prepping so you don’t miss out on all the festive joy. Lucky for you, we’ve rounded up a quick checklist of the classic CNY festivities so you can prepare to have the time of your life this festive season!

Preceding days

These are the days to do your spring cleaning. Traditionally, cleaning on the 1st day of CNY is highly frowned upon as it's believed to be removing fortune and prosperity. Hence, it’s best to do it about a week before the actual day.

Of course, in the spirit of having a clean house, it’s also important to have a fresh set of clothes. Festive shopping for new clothes and groceries are typically down around this time as this also means greater discounts lined up. During these times, try to limit going out unless it’s for something important so you can avoid unnecessary traffic jams. Otherwise, you can always do your shopping the safe way ─ on Signature Market!

The eve

This is the day to reunite and rejoice with loved ones. As this is the day of the long-awaited reunion dinner, it’s also a pretty busy day as we spend our hours in the kitchen. After the dinner, in spirit of ushering in CNY, children will typically join in the festivities with setting off of fireworks or firecrackers. Do try to be mindful of neighbours and furry ones too as the noise can be quite disruptive.

D-Day

The morning of CNY is usually a noisy one too as firecrackers are set off first thing in the morning to chase away any bad spirits for a prosperous year ahead. After that, family members will have a nice hearty meal together. Most people choose to eat dumplings as their shape symbolise heaps of fortune. Personally, I eat it because it tastes good but nobody needs to know that.

After the meal is typically the happiest and most highly-anticipated time for the younger generations, because it’s angpao time! It’s a truly enjoyable time for many as we’ll pay a visit to our extended families and relatives as well.
