Rosemary Benefits.

by Kevin | 27 Jun 2019

There are plenty of people in Malaysia that are unaware of the benefits of rosemary. This is something which does strike me as odd due to the fact that something which carries so many benefits would truly be an instant hit in a country like Malaysia. For the people who do not know this, rosemary or rosmarinus officinalis is an evergreen shrub with needle like leaves and it carries a woody aroma. Though rosemary is best known as a food seasoning, it is also one of the most popular aromatic and medicinal plants in the world.

Rosemary’s essential oil, which is something that holds the plant’s core components, or essence, is extracted and then sold in small bottles. Despite its name, it is not a true oil, as it does not contain any fat. Due to rosemary oil’s use in as a source of medicine, many scientists are now testing its potential health benefits. Though most of this research is just in its beginning phase, it still supports some traditional uses of the oil and it also illustrates the possibility for the newer uses. In this article, we will be taking a look at some of the many benefits of rosemary!

1. ROSEMARY MAY IMPROVE BRAIN FUNCTION.
In ancient Greece and Rome, rosemary was thought to be something that strengthens your memory. Research has indicated that inhaling rosemary oil will help in preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is a brain chemical important for thinking, concentration and even memory. When about 20 young adults were asked math questions in a small room which was diffused with rosemary oil, their speed and accuracy tend to increase in direct proportion to the duration the oil was being diffused.

Additionally, their blood levels of certain rosemary compounds likewise increased, which illustrating that rosemary is able to enter your body simply through breathing. Similarly, nursing students who breathed rosemary oil while taking a test also reported an increase in their concentration level and information recall I comparison to breathing lavender oil or no essential oil at all. Other research has also suggested that breathing rosemary and other essential oils may help in improving brain function in older adults with dementia, which includes those with Alzheimer’s disease. Just keep in mind that more in depth research is needed.

2. ROSEMARY STIMULATES HAIR GROWTH.
One of the most common types of hair loss is referred to as androgenetic alopecia, which is better known as male pattern baldness, though it may also affect females. Rosemary oil is known for treating androgenetic alopecia by stopping a byproduct of testosterone from attacking your hair follicles, and this is known as the cause of this condition. When men with androgenetic alopecia started massaging the diluted rosemary oil into their scalp two times on a daily basis for about six months, they then experienced the same amount of increase in hair thickness as those who used minoxidil or Rogaine, which is a common hair regrowth remedy.

Additionally, those who used the rosemary oil also reported less scalp itching in comparison to minoxidil, which has suggested that rosemary may be more tolerable. Other research has indicated that rosemary oil may also fight patchy hair loss, or alopecia areata, which will affect up to half the population below the age of 21 and about 20% of the people above 40. When people with alopecia areata rubbed rosemary essential oil blend into their scalp on a daily basis for seven months, 44% of them showed an improvement in their hair loss in comparison to only 15% in the control group, who used the neutral oils such as jojoba and grapeseed.

3. ROSEMARY MAY HELP RELIEVE PAIN.
In the older times for medicine, rosemary was utilized as a mild pain reliever. In a two week study, stroke survivors with shoulder pain who received a rosemary oil blend with acupressure for about 20 minutes twice on a daily basis experienced a 30% reduction in their pain. The people who received only acupressure had a 15% reduction in their pain Additionally, an animal study also determined that rosemary oil was slightly more effective for pain relief when compared to acetaminophen, which is a common over the counter pain medication.

4. ROSEMARY REPELS CERTAIN BUGS.
For deterring harmful insects that may possibly bite you or infest your garden, try considering rosemary oil as a natural alternative to chemical products. When a rosemary oil based pesticide, EcoTrol, was sprayed on greenhouse tomato plants, it helped reduce the population of two spotted spider mites by around 52% without harming any of the plants. Rosemary also helps repel certain blood sucking insects that may possibly spread harmful viruses and bacteria.

When rosemary oil was measured against up to 11 other essential oils, it had the longest repellent effect on aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are known for spreading the Zika virus. A dilution of 12.5% rosemary oil repelled about 100% of the mosquitoes for at least 90 minutes. Additionally, a spray which contained 10% of the rosemary oil was similarly effective as the chemical insecticide which is bifenthrin which is used for controlling the spread of black legged ticks, which tend to harbor Lyme disease, in certain tick infested areas in the northeastern US.

5. ROSEMARY MAY REDUCE JOINT INFLAMMATION.
Preliminary evidence has suggested that rosemary oil may help in reducing tissue inflammation that may lead to swelling, pain and as well as stiffness. It may do so by stemming the migration of white blood cells to injured tissues in order to release inflammatory chemicals. When people with rheumatoid arthritis were given a 15 minute knee massage using a rosemary oil blend at least three times weekly, they had a 50% decrease in inflammatory knee pain in just two weeks, in comparison to a 12% decrease in those who were not given the oil.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which your body’s own immune system will attack tissues, such as knees and also other joints, injuring the joint lining and then causing inflammation. However, more research is needed on rosemary’s impact on inflammation.

6. ROSEMARY MAY INCREASE CIRCULATION.
Poor circulation tends to be a common complaint. You may happen to notice it the most in your hands and feet. If you experience cold fingers and toes, and even in relatively warm temperatures, rosemary oil is definitely worth considering. In one study, a woman with Raynaud’s disease, which usually impairs circulation, massaged her hands with some rosemary oil blend, and she found out that it helped warm her fingers more than a neutral oil. These effects were then confirmed by thermal imaging. If you have Raynaud’s disease, blood vessels in your fingers and toes will constrict when you are cold or stressed, which will cause them to lose their color and turn cold.

Rosemary oil could potentially help by expanding your blood vessels, thereby warming your blood so that it will reach your fingers and toes more easily. More research is needed in order to confirm these effects, but rosemary may prove a worthwhile, low cost experiment.
