Your Guide To Dreams

by Stefanie | 24 Jul 2021

“Sleep isn’t just sleep anymore. It’s an escape”.

We don’t know about you but sleep has got to be one of the most rewarding moments after a hard day’s work. As a matter of fact, our entire night routine adds just the perfect amount of enchantment to end our day. From applying your nightly skincare to setting your alarm for the next morning to the moment your head hits the pillow, every step leading up to sleep is just captivating. What’s even better is the dreams we enfold in during our sleep.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, we typically dream about 4-6 times every night. We know what you’re thinking − no way. Well, that’s because we forget more than 95% of our dreams, which explains why even the most vivid dreams tend to be forgotten the second we wake up.

Why do we dream? Though there aren’t any definite or concrete answers to this, there are several factors that contribute to the occurrence of the following types of dreams.

1. Standard dreams.
A standard and normal dream can be influenced by what we’re thinking about before going to sleep. It can even be influenced by what we’ve experienced during the day. So chances are, these dreams are more likely to correlate with or bring to light what you’re thinking about or doing in the day.

2. Nightmares.
A nightmare is simply terrifying or disturbing, whether you experienced it as a child or as an adult. Everyone’s bound to have nightmares from time to time and it’s even scarier when they appear realistic. What’s more for those who have mental health disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may even experience recurring nightmares.

3. Lucid dreams. Lucid dreaming is when you’re completely aware and in control of the dream you’re having while still being asleep. This often happens when you’re in your rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In other words, it occurs when there’s a boost of energy or activity in parts of your brain that are otherwise meant to be at rest during sleep thus may cause sleep problems for you.
