Sweet, savoury, rich - bak kut teh’s introduction into the Malaysian and Singaporean communities is a gift that keeps on giving no matter the variation or style of cooking. Originally hailed as the poor man’s tonic, this dish is now the star of many a late night dinner or supper, often eaten with a side of crispy you tiao/eu char koay/Chinese cruller. The aromatic smell of a bubbling pot of bak kut teh never fails to whet one’s appetite.
Growing up in Malaysia, it’s hard to miss the steaming bowls of white rice flooded with savoury bone and herb broth topped with an assortment of mushrooms, braised meat and innards when passing by a kopitiam that’s open especially late. For our Muslim brothers and sisters, there would be the halal but no less delicious version comprising chicken as the meat replacement. But regardless of your religion or food preference (vegetarian diet, anyone?), our BKT Soup Spices & Herbs Mix is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and warmth in your tummy. Made from a delicious blend of herbs and spices that are guaranteed vegetarian-friendly, this soup is nourishing enough on its own but you can also opt to add in meat (chicken, pork, innards/intestines) or even just vegetables (an assortment of mushrooms recommended) if you’re on a meat-free diet. So don’t worry if it’s halal or if the meat is too fatty because you’re in control of whatever ingredients you add in!

What Does This Taste Like?
Comforting, rich, savoury and aromatic herbal broth that’s naturally sweet with a very slight bitter undertone.

Health Benefits

Usage Directions
1. Blanch chicken meat in boiled water (OPTIONAL: You may choose to replace chicken with any meat you prefer or choose to not include meat at all).
2. Pour the soup pack ingredients , garlic and meat into a pot of water (2 litres). Bring to boil on high heat.
3. Once the soup is boiled, lower the heat and allow it to simmer for another 1 hour 30 minutes.
4. Season with salt, soya sauce, oyster sauce and pepper according to your preference and let it continue simmering for another 10 minutes before serving.
*Serves 4-5 persons.

How To Consume
Serve on its own or with a side of rice, crispy you tiao/eu char koay/Chinese crullers and dark soy sauce mixed with finely chopped garlic.

Allergy Information
Not suitable for pregnant women due to glycyrrhizin content.

Storage Instructions
Store in an airtight container or in its original resealable bag to maintain freshness. Keep in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposure to sunlight or excessive heat.
