Keeping Track Of Your New Year’s Yoga Resolutions

by Dhanya Parameswaran | 27 Dec 2021

It is that time of year again where many people are looking for resolutions to live by. If you are among the group, then it is likely that New Year's Yoga Resolutions are on your list! So how do you actually stick to them? There are a few things that will help you stay committed this year and not just fall at the first hurdle.

1. Try different types of Yoga classes and practices

It is easy to become stuck in a rut with one style of yoga. You locate a yoga studio or class that you enjoy and continue with it, but did you know that there are a variety of yoga techniques to choose from? Experiencing diverse teachers, techniques, and philosophies of practice might help you deepen your practice and extend your knowledge of yoga. A hot yoga session, for example, will be very different from a yin yoga class. A Kundalini yoga class will provide you with several rigorous breathing exercises, but an Iyengar yoga class may not teach you pranayama until you are a more accomplished student. Perhaps you could try laughing yoga, aerial yoga, or a partner yoga session if you are looking for something different this coming new year.

2. Stop judging your practice

The greatest challenge in yoga practice is to overcome the deep-seated idea of achieving the “perfect” and Instagram-worthy fancy poses. Although our minds are aware that yoga is not about competition, it happens subconsciously. To kick the habit, we should always encourage ourselves to take a break and focus on our own yoga journeys to be appreciative of our little achievements we have accomplished so far.

3. Practice what yoga preaches

Yoga's philosophy encourages you to be smart, speak the truth, be one with nature, and practice ahimsa, or non-violence and cruelty-free living. When we resolve to conduct our lives according to this concept, the world will blossom with ample attractive individuals. This philosophy also promotes togetherness, human values, and humanitarian duty. If you know other yogis in your region, you could organize a service activity like teaching the underprivileged over the weekend or cleaning up your neighborhood.

4. Ask for help to keep your yoga resolutions

While steering clear of subconsciously competing for the glitz and glamour of social media, consider buddying up with your loved ones and challenge each other to keep up the habit of practicing yoga every day for 21 days to properly establish the pattern of healthy living. At the end of each session, text or call one another to track your progress and be sure to stay consistent; No cheating!
