Grand Total:

Boost your memory with these foods

by Kevin | 8 Jul 2019

Most of us have been in a place where we feel that we lack focus and can’t seem to concentrate. This can happen at work, school or even when you’re at home trying to do the simplest things such as chores. It is natural for humans, especially in a country like Malaysia where some of us who work overtime whether is those working people like me or students trying to get better grades.

However the right kind of food can help in boosting brain and energy levels. Below I will be sharing 10 types of food that can boost your brain and memory!

Food that are good for your BRAINS!

1. Walnut

This wouldn't come to you as a surprise because as kids we were already told by our parents to eat those not so delicious (at least for me) but nutritious walnuts! If you do look at walnut you’d definitely realize that it is shaped like the human brain and is said to help boost brain power.

You’ll just need to munch on a few walnuts every day to improve your cognitive health. Besides that, walnuts are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that keeps you alert. According to a research, vitamin E in Walnuts can prevent you from getting Alzheimer’s later on in life! You should give this superfood a try as it is available in both online and offline markets in Malaysia.

• Method of consuming: You can consume walnuts raw or roasted as it is. It can be an added flavour to your cereals or oats too! *for those who don’t like the taste you can blend it in a smoothie that you like*

2. Turmeric

Turmeric could be a brain boosting food? (or spice). That yellowish cooking ingredient that we often try to avoid dipping our hands into to avoid it’s color staining our hands who would have thought is considered to be one of the miracle ancient recipes. So what makes turmeric so special?

Well, turmeric is considered as the most powerful (and natural) anti-inflammatory agents. This is because turmeric also helps boost antioxidant levels and keep your immune system healthy, while also improving your brain’s oxygen intake, keeping you alert and able to process information.

• Method of consuming: I personally add this spice to the homemade curry’s. However, you could just easily add turmeric to any stir fry recipe (even fried eggs). Turmeric can be added to your afternoon tea if you do not mind the taste!

3. Salmon

So the salmon fish is usually consumed because it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids as well as other health benefits. It is considered as a brain boosting foods too. It is a very good option if it doesn’t take a toll on your bank balance.

However bare in mind that these benefits are for Alaskan wild-caught salmon and farm-raised as regular wild-caught salmon can be filled with mercury and toxins.

• Method of consuming: Salmon can be cooked in many ways. However, best served baked!

4. Green Vegetables

According to a study that evaluated the eating habits and mental ability of more than 950 older adults for an average of five years. The results showed those adults who ate a serving of leafy green veggies once or twice a day had experienced slower mental deterioration than those who ate no vegetables even when factors like age, education and family history of dementia were factored in Green.

Green vegetables especially those leafy vegetables are also loaded with vitamins A and K which helps fight inflammation and keep bones strong.

• Method of Consuming: Green vegetables can be cooked in many ways but it is best to not cook it more than 15 mins to keep its nutrients intact.

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is has been known for its benefits. In recent years olive oil is gaining popularity as many people are moving to healthier options. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is much more superior in taste, texture and aroma. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is said to be rich in antioxidants and help ward off Alzhemeirs.

• Method of consuming: Extra virgin olive oil can be used to stir fry vegetables or for easy, minimal cooking as it is not meant for heavy duty cooking. You can also be used as a salad dressing too!

6. Egg Yolks

For those on a diet might be avoiding the egg yolks (due to its high carbohydrates) even though you love it. I mean why eat eggs anyway if you have to throw away the best part? However, now we have more reasons to consume eggs with the yolks!

So yolks contain large amounts of choline, which helps in fetal brain development for pregnant women. It also breaks down bethane which is a chemical that produces hormones related to happiness.

7. Dark Chocolate

For those with a sweet tooth here’s some good news. Dark chocolate aids in keeping brain healthy and memory sharp. Here’s why. DarkChocolate is packed with flavonols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dark chocolates can also help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to both the brain and heart. It is best to consume chocolates that have at least 70% of cocoa.

• Method of consuming: Add it to some greek yogurt, oats, baked items etc. Consume however you love to!

8. Blueberries

So this is a personal favourite of mine. Fruits are a good substitute to chocolates if you have a sweet tooth. Since we are talking about foods that boost memory and brain power, blueberries are rich in antioxidants, and vitamins including vitamin C and vitamin K and fiber.

In addition, blueberries have high levels of gallic acid which is why they are especially good at protecting our brains from degeneration and stress.

• Method of consuming: Best way to consume this delicious fruit is to add into your bowl of yogurt or oats!

9. Avocados

Avocados is one of the healthiest fruits that you can consume. Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats or the “good” kind which help in keeping blood sugar levels steady and your skin glowing. Avocados also contain both vitamin K and folate which also help in preventing blood clots in the brain (protecting you against stroke) as well as help improve cognitive function especially both memory and concentration.

Besides that, they’re also rich in vitamin B and vitamin C, which aren’t stored in your body and need to be replenished daily. Also, they have the highest protein and lowest sugar content of any fruit.

• Method of consuming: You can spread it on your toast or just eat it as it is as it is delicious either way.

10. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a fruit (or nut) used for many of its benefits since the ancient times as it serves for many purposes. Coconut oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, suppressing cells responsible for inflammation. It can aid with memory loss as you age and destroy bad bacteria that hangs out in your gut.

• Method of consuming: Coconut oil can be added to many of the home cook recipes as you can replace your regular cooking oil to coconut oil as a high smoke point and longer shelf life than some other fats.
